CIRCULARITY
Building a circular economy starts with
engineering design that considers
environmental impacts across the full lifecycle
of a project
In 2025, we expanded our life cycle assessment (LCA) capabilities by
integrating third-party software and facilitating training for project
personnel. By integrating LCAs early in design engineering, we improve
circularity across project delivery, reduce material use, strengthen
waste management, and increasing reusability within operations.
Measuring circularity provides a data-driven method to evaluate
environmental impacts across the infrastructure lifecycle, including
decommissioning. All LCAs are conducted in accordance with ISO
14040, 14044, and 14025, and EN15804-A2 standards, while the circularity
assessments are in line with ISO 59000.
In 2025, we prepared project-speci昀椀c circularity and LCA reports to
integrate circularity principles into project execution and measure
their impact. These reports were independently veri昀椀ed, ensuring
transparency and alignment with international standards. We are now
scaling this approach across our project portfolio to support customer
requirements, strengthen strategic decision-making and meet evolving
regulatory expectations.
CASE STUDY
SUSTAINABILITY IN PROJECT DELIVERY
In 2025, McDermott launched an in-house circularity calculator
aligned with ISO 59020 to provide clients with transparent,
data-based circular economy performance insights across
the lifecycle of energy infrastructure projects. The tool provides
a standardized method for assessing circularity from design
to decommissioning and supports our strategy to embed
circularity across all phases of project execution, delivering cost,
environmental, and supply chain bene昀椀ts.
Our waste recycling program advances circularity by repurposing
fabrication waste, including salvaging steel, wood, and equipment
for reuse, reducing land昀椀ll impact and improving resource
ef昀椀ciency. In 2025, we continued to adopt innovative repurposing
practices in our yards. Our Jebel Ali yard repurposed a temporary
of昀椀ce scheduled for demolition into a portable restroom by
stripping the structure to its frame, salvaging usable materials,
and refurbishing it for continued use.
