Energy Transition
CASE STUDY
We combine vertical integration and technical know-how to support
customers seeking lower-carbon solutions consistent with energy
transition.
GREEN STEEL
We support TenneT’s BorWin 6 project and the 2GW Program
(BalWin4 and LanWin1). One of the world’s most signi昀椀cant renewable
energy infrastructure developments, TenneT will play a critical role
in strengthening Europe’s energy security in line with its ambition to
become the world’s 昀椀rst climate-neutral continent by 2050. Since 2020,
we have won several contracts to advance new work for TenneT in the
high-voltage direct current (HVDC) market, delivering offshore HVDC
stations to advance the electri昀椀cation of the German infrastructure
linked to wind energy.
The Joint Offshore Wind Investment Pact for the North Seas targets 300
GW of installed wind generation capacity in the North Seas by 2050,
including 100 GW from cooperation projects. The pact was signed
by the governments of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland,
Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom.
McDermott is supporting Europe’s largest green hydrogen
project, which marks the world’s 昀椀rst green steel facility. Our
scope includes providing EPC services for the Steel Mill Project,
Hydrogen Manufacturing Plant, Water Treatment Plants 1 & 2
and the Slag Handling Unit. The project integrates one of the
world’s largest electrolysis plants near the Arctic Circle.
Green steel produced here will have 95% lower carbon
intensity than conventional steel. By 2030, the facility aims to
produce 昀椀ve million tonnes of green steel annually, reducing
emissions in a sector estimated to account for more than 7%
of global CO2 emissions.
CASE STUDY
SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL
McDermott is delivering sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
projects across North America and Europe, aligned with
multi-government mandates around use of SAF. In 2025, we
were selected to provide front-end engineering and design
for Metafuels’ Turbe project, a 昀椀rst-of-its-kind synthetic SAF
production facility intended to advance scalable aviation
decarbonization across Europe.
In the UK, we are supporting early engineering services for a
biogas-to-liquid (BtL) SAF project to prove the technical and
commercial viability of converting biogas into liquid aviation
fuel. The project targets annual production of ~14,000 tonnes
(~50,000 litres per day) and has been supported through the
UK Government’s Advanced Fuel Funding (AFF) program.
Through our partnership with Stegra, we are proving the
feasibility of large-scale green steel mills. This 昀椀rst-ofits-kind project demonstrates our commitment to client
partnership and decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries.
