DECARBONIZING OUR OPERATIONS
Marine operations
Aboard McDermott’s custom 昀氀eet of marine construction vessels, we prioritize the same guiding principles that
we extend to our onshore operations – using effective management practices to increase energy ef昀椀ciency and
exploring innovative methods to decrease net energy consumption.
Our focus on marine ef昀椀ciency includes operating our vessels in eco-ef昀椀cient mode when in transit. By operating at
a lower speed, they burn less fuel, which allows for signi昀椀cant emissions reductions. In 2022, the marine team issued
a directive to operate our 昀氀agship vessel, the DLV2000, at an ef昀椀cient speed during transit, reducing cruising speed
from 12 knots to 10.5 knots. This operational adjustment was aimed at enhancing fuel ef昀椀ciency and minimizing
environmental impact. As a result, the vessel’s fuel consumption per hour decreased by 21% from 2020 to 2023. The
implementation of ef昀椀cient speed model not only increased energy use but also supported our commitment to
sustainable practices, aligning with global maritime environmental standards and reducing operational costs over
time.
Throughout our marine operations, we use Marine Diesel Oil and Marine Gasoil, consistent with our commitment to
reduce emissions and in keeping with the International Maritime Organization’s requirement on low-sulfur fuel.
DLV2000 SUSTAIN 1 CLASSIFICATION
McDermott’s heavy lift and rigid pipelay vessel, the Derrick Lay Vessel 2000 (DLV2000), demonstrated this
commitment to excellence when it was awarded SUSTAIN-1 (S-1) classi昀椀cation from the American Bureau of Shipping.
This 2024 recognition marked the 昀椀rst time a marine construction vessel in its class achieved this sustainability
certi昀椀cate. The S-1 classi昀椀cation recognized DLV2000 for its environmental performance, including energy ef昀椀ciency,
waste management, emissions reductions, and coastal ecosystem preservation.
The classi昀椀cation stands as a testament to our ability to adapt and meet evolving customer needs with a focus on
operational excellence and environmental stewardship in marine construction.
