BUILDING TOMORROW
GREEN HYDROGEN AND AMMONIA
FLOATING LOW-CARBON AMMONIA
HVDC CONVERTERS
In 2024, we were awarded an agreement from Abraxas Power
Corporation to create Canada’s 昀椀rst commercial green
hydrogen and ammonia production facility. The project will
include the development of an up to 530-turbine wind farm
with the capacity to produce 165 kilo tons of ammonia (KTA) of
hydrogen and 5000 metric tons per day of ammonia.
We entered a collaboration in 2024 with BW Offshore to
advance the technical and commercial viability of 昀氀oating
low-carbon ammonia.
In 2024, our Batam fabrication yard in Indonesia commenced
fabrication for TenneT’s High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)
offshore converter stations. This project is one of the most
signi昀椀cant renewable energy infrastructure developments in
the world. It will play a critical role in strengthening Europe’s
energy security, in line with its ambition to become the world’s
昀椀rst climate-neutral continent by 2050.
McDermott will provide front-end engineering design,
engineering, procurement, and construction execution
planning services for the hydrogen production, ammonia
processing, and product storage portion of the project. The
agreement attests to our industry-leading delivery and
installation expertise and the breadth of our capabilities
across energy transition.
The collaboration will leverage our expertise to advance
development of low-carbon ammonia production aboard a
昀氀oating, production, storage, and of昀氀oading (FPSO) facility.
FPSOs have the potential to unlock multiple bene昀椀ts for
ammonia production, including advantages in environment,
health and safety, schedule certainty, and a competitive cost
of ammonia with capital ef昀椀cient options.
The project will contribute to the global transition to lowcarbon energy sources and reinforce our commitment to
sustainable energy practices.
Concurrently, McDermott is involved in a consortium that is
conducting a lifecycle assessment, including an environmental
cost indicator using SimaPro software, to set the sustainability
benchmark and capture the reduction in energy, materials,
and transportation up to and including the HVDC’s 昀椀nal
installation on site.
